"I could barely do half a mile before I quit"

I turned into the runner I never thought I'd be. My name is Zach and I started my running career the summer of my 7th grade year. We would always run timed miles in gym and my times were in the upper 10's and low 11's. I hated it. Due to my size at the time, I was too small to play football and too fragile to take on soccer. My parents suggested cross country and so I went with it. The first day we did a 1 mile run and if you were up to the challenge, you could do 1.5 miles. I could barely do half a mile before I quit. I couldn't get it. But then something clicked. I finished that season with a 7:23 mile. Then at the end of my 8th grade year, a 5:59 mile. I thought getting any time under 6 minutes was extremely fast. Today, about to be a senior in high school, I finished with a mile time of 4:50. I never dreamt of even getting below 5:45. It certainly has been a long journey
