April showers bring May flowers.

Hi, my name is Meghan and I’m a runner at the University of Texas. Last April I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. This came as a shock to me, my coaches, and teammates because I had been in the best shape of my life; I was coming off of a successful indoor season and outdoor was off to a good start with a school record at Texas Relays. Because my season was looking as promising as ever and the fact that the cancer was slow growing I was able to finish the season before surgery. I ran my fastest steeple chase at regionals and broke my own school record, but fell short of my goal to go to nationals.

Since having my thyroid removed, running hasn’t been easy. I have been cleared to run but still feeling the affects, both mentally and physically. It is really similar to someone coming back from a stress injury. It is hard for anyone to have to go from being a contributor to barely hanging on in workouts. It is easy when you are coming back to get down on yourself and feel like you will never be the same. But it will get better. For me, it is slowly getting better and better each week, and even though I’m not where I want to be it is important to celebrate the little accomplishments everyday that are getting me closer and closer to that goal.

My coach always tells me to focus on the bigger picture. For me that is continuing to strive for my goal of competing at Nationals in the steeplechase, and getting ready for championship races this cross season; the beginning meets are not defining the runner I am or will be in a few months. My point is to keep your head up and focus on the end goal, getting there may have some hills (or mountains) to climb but that doesn’t mean you won’t get there! Remind yourself to stay calm, stay patient, and stay motivated. After it is over, you will realize how this tough season in your life has humbled you and changed your perspective for the better. Your injury doesn’t define you or limit you, it’s just a part of your story.
