Weekend Recap 2/10 - 2/12

Very busy weekend. And in a sport where everything is scattered throughout the internet, it can be a bit hard to take it all in, or even know what happened. Starting today, each weekend we'll be posting a recap of everything that happened within the week in the world of distance running. They'll usually be posted on Mondays. 

Women's Half-Marathon World Record

On February 10th, Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir broke the Women's Half-Marathon World Record with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes and 6 seconds or 65:06 at the RAK Half Marathon in Dubai. That converts to 4:57 per mile for 13 miles.

Jepchirchir shattered the previous record of 65:09 that was set by Florence Kiplagat in 2015. 

Women's Running Magazine also reports that she collapsed moments after crossing the finish line. Jepchirchir walked away with $100,000 for winning the race. 

The 800-meter takedown

American, Collegiate and High School Indoor Women's records all taken down.

22 year old Olympian Ajee Wilson took down Women's Indoor American  800-meter record while competing at the Millrose Games in New York with a time of 1:58.27. The previous record was 1:58.71, held by Nicole Teter. Which hadn't been touched since 2002. 

At the same meet, High School Senior Sammy Watson took down former Olympian and high school phenom Mary Decker's 800-meter girl's prep record of 2:01.8 that had been standing since 1978. Watson ran 2:01.78. 

Jazmine Fray, Sophomore at Texas A&M ran 2:00.69 at the Clemson Tiger Invitational to break the NCAA Women's Indoor 800-meter record. Breaking Nicole Cook's 2:00.85 from 2005. And shattering her previous indoor best of 2:04.76. 

500-meter Indoor American Record Broken

22 year old Olympian Courtney Okolo broke Jearle Miles-Clark's 1:08.71 by running 1:07.34 at the Millrose Games, a record that had been held since 2004.

Women's Wannamaker Mile

Sifan Hassan, a member of the Nike Oregon Project and citizen of the Netherlands broke the Women's Millrose Mile record by running 4:19.89. Becoming the fourth women ever to break 4:20 indoors. 

Following behind Hassan was Kate Grace (2nd, 4:22.93), Shannon Rowbury (3rd, 4:23.05), Heather Kampf (4th, 4:28.39), Kaela Edwards (6th, 4:28.75), Elinor Purrier (4:29.44), Alexa Eframimson (4:29.54)

Men's Wannamaker Mile

The Men's Mile also happened to be won by a member of the Nike Oregon Project, Eric Jenkins. He finished with a time of 3:53.23, the fastest time in the world this year. And right behind him coming in 2nd and 3rd was Clayton Murphy (3:54.31) and Kyle Merber (3:54.67)

Other notable finishes in the Men's Wannamaker Mile, Colby Alexander (5th, 3:55.99), Drew Hunter (7th, 3:56.80), Robby Andrews (8th, 3:57.04), Izaic Yorks (10th, 4:01.64)

High School Millrose Mile

The Boy's High School Mile was led by high school stand out Noah Affolder with a time of 4:07.24, fastest high school time the Millrose Mile has seen in over 40 years. Behind Affolder was Brodey Hasty (2nd, 4:08.04), And his younger brother Sam Affolder came in 5th, 4:13.45. 

The Girls' Mile was led by Abbie Goldstein of Germantown Academy with a time of 4:49.06. Behind Goldstein, Olivia Beckner (4:51.27) who edged out Kelsey Chmiel (4:51.49) by a hang nail. 

Husky Classic Miles

At the Husky Classic in Seattle, Olympians Evan Jager and Lopez Lomong finished side by side with an identical time of 3:56.55.

Two new members of the Sub-4 minute mile club, Oregon teammates, Matthew Maton (3:58.34) and Tim Gorman (3:58.78). Oregon freshman Austin Tamagno also ran a personal best of 4:01.02.

Joshua Thompson of Oklahoma State ran the fastest NCAA mile this year, 3:56.89. 

3,000 Meter Achievements

Tulsa's Marc Scott (7:47.57) and Syracuse's Justyn Knight (7:47.82) finished one, two at the Iowa State Classic. 

Sophomore at Colorado, Joe Klecker won the Husky Classic 3,000-meter, 7:51.43. 

Katie Rainsberger, Freshman at Oregon ran the fastest Women's 3,000-meter this year with a time of 9:01.21 at the Husky Classic, Behind Rainsberger was Dani Jones (9:02.22), who ran the second fastest time in the nation.

Edward Cheserek ran a personal best and NCAA leading time of 13:32.59 to win the Husky Classic. 

Other Notable Men's 5,000-meter finishes at the Husky Classic, Cody Gilbert (2nd, 13:34.85), Erik Peterson (3rd, 13:40.90), John Dressell (4th, 13:42.57), Jerrell Mock (5th, 13.44.65)

Campbell College's Armon Terer ran the sixth fastest time in the nation by winning the Men's 5,000-meter at the Iowa State Classic, 13.42.78.

Erin Finn ran the fastest NCAA Women's 5,000-meter in the nation with a time of 15:34.36 at the SPIRE meet. 

Furman's Allie Buchalski ran 15:46.86 to win the Iowa State Classic. Followed by Eastern Michigan's Jordan McDermitt (15:50.16)

The Women's Husky Classic 5,000-meter was won by Penn State Sophomore, Tessa Barrett (15:51.32). 

Other notable 5,000-meter finishers at the Husky Classic, Judy Pendergast (2nd, 15:52.64), Chelsea Blaase (3rd, 15:53.73), Lauren LaRocco (4th, 15:54.26), Alice Wright (7th, 16:00.67), Brenna Peloquin (23rd, 16:24.38)
