Runner's Joy

Runner's Joy

Non runners always talk about how good runner’s high must feel, how if they ran that would be the only thing worth doing it for. I think at the very least, the term is misnamed. The phrase makes running sound like a drug with side effects. Like runners high was something that took pain away. But running always hurts, even on the best day.

I think runner’s high is different than what non runners imagine. Runner’s joy is a better explanation of what we consider the best parts of running. Runner’s joy is a deep talk with your teammates on a run. It’s collapsing across the finish line with your best friends all around you. It’s the random joy that you feel in your heart on a run that catches you off guard. It’s dinner with your teammates the day before a race. It’s the people. The family it creates. That’s runner’s joy to me.
